Are you a glass-half-empty or glass-half-full kind of person? Do you see the good things from the "bad"?

If you're looking to take control of your own life and become happier, then you'll want to continue reading.

What if I told you the answer to all your trouble was right in front of you? That you've always had what it took to lead a better life. That you've always had a bright future ahead?

The answer has been in you all along. It's optimism.

Research shows that it can significantly boost happiness.

Many factors contribute to our happiness, including our lifestyle, our relationships, and the quality of our work. But, optimism is one of the key factors in determining your level of happiness.

Happiness and optimism often go hand in hand. In times of uncertainty and doubt, optimism keeps hope alive. It's what helps you see the good things from the negative events.

Having an optimistic outlook on your life plays a much more significant role in your happiness than you may think - it can improve your life today and help you grow in any area of your life.

What is optimism?

Optimism is the belief that the future will be better than the present. It's the idea that we can always make things better. To feel optimistic, you need to see the positive sides of every situation. You need to look at things from the outside in rather than just the inside out. And if you don't like where you are, you need to be willing to change that.

Optimistic people are better at handling stress, coping with adversity, and adjusting to change, all of which can help you reach your goals. Nothing is handed to you after all. Of course, optimism doesn't mean being blindly positive all the time. This post isn't about toxic positivity but rather the mindset of positivity.

What you see and believe in can make or break you. If you're optimistic, you will think that everything will work out fine; but if you're pessimistic, you'll expect that things will go wrong.

The issue is that your belief system is self-fulfilling. Whatever you focus on will happen even if it's completely wrong.

It's a way of thinking about yourself and your future that can cause you to make good or bad decisions for yourself. Usually, pessimists will choose the latter and settle down with decisions that bring them down.

For example, not speaking up at a meeting, not picking up that new skill, not speaking to a new person at school or work and much more.

An optimist sees the good and the opportunity that comes from any decision.

Here's why you may want to be a little more optimistic.

Health benefits of positive thinking

Optimism can make you feel better about your current situation, and it can help you achieve things that you never thought were possible. It can help you get through difficult life events.

It can be hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel; however, optimism helps you see the opportunities that come with the setbacks.

Optimism gives you the tools to be more effective in achieving your goals and gives you the ability to feel positive about yourself and your future.

If you have to choose to work with or be with someone hopeful and grateful versus desperate and defeated, who would you choose?

An optimistic attitude has fantastic benefits that can ripple through all areas of your life as well as the lives of others.

Here are a few ways in which it improves your life.

Physical health

It's been shown that optimism positively affects your physical health, including cardiovascular health and longevity. Having a positive outlook and self-acceptance helps you handle stressful times better than pessimists.

Recent studies demonstrate that optimists are less likely to die from cardiovascular disease than pessimists. It strengthens your immune system and your overall healing ability.

It should not be a surprise that it improves the quality of your physical health. After all, you are more likely to engage in healthy behaviours when you believe that you can achieve better health.

Mental health

There are multiple positive impacts on mental health.

Optimists are more resilient as they are better at coping with challenging events. They overcome adversities and disappointments quicker than their pessimistic counterparts. They can focus on the good things while working to solve the problems they face. These all increase psychological well-being.

Career

Optimism gives people confidence in their capabilities.

It gives them the curiosity and willingness to learn a new skill or improve an existing one by going above and beyond.

Naturally, these traits will lead to more opportunities and development in the workplace. They encourage one to think outside the box and provide more value to an organization and do a good job, which leads to a more successful career.

Relationships

Being optimistic about your relationships with others can have excellent benefits. Optimists are more likely to find love, have a more fulfilling marriage and are more satisfied with their friends.

They see the positive aspects of their romantic relationships. They can look past the negative and appreciate the good.

Optimistic people tend to be happier in life, which is contagious. Everyone loves being around happy people.

Can you imagine being with a pessimist friend, lover or colleague that always complains and sees the bad in everything? You must have, and I bet you didn't enjoy their presence. People don't like you when you are like that either.

Relationships are essential to everyone. Even if you don't have a romantic relationship with someone else, you can still positively influence your community.

When you're happy and optimistic, you tend to be more open to the world around you. You're more likely to interact with others and become part of a group. You will also be more likely to do things that will make you feel better.

Optimistic individuals can navigate stressful situations easier since they have better social support.

All in all, these areas all contribute to your overall life satisfaction. Each is positively affected by optimism which leads to even more positive outcomes.

As an optimist, you are more fulfilled, have more positive emotions, and have less negative outlook than pessimists. You will naturally see yourself as more capable of achieving what you want.

How to cultivate optimism?

Optimism is a positive mindset cultivated by changing your habits.

There is no magic formula. It takes time and practice. If you start small, you can gradually change your narrative and self-talk whenever challenging situations happen in your life. I assure you that positive changes will arise, and you will have a better quality of life by incorporating the habits below.

Here are some tips on how you can become a more optimistic person:

1. Practice gratitude. You have a lot to be thankful for. It's easy to get caught up in the negative and what you don't have. However, it's crucial to think about all the silver linings that you have in your life. Take a moment every day to appreciate the simple things. You'll reduce the power that bad things have in your life that way. It's all about the little things!

2. Don't take things personally.

3. Be hopeful.

4. Make optimism a habit. If you want to be optimistic, you have to practice it. The more you practice it, the more it will become a part of you.

5. Believe in yourself. If you don't believe in yourself, you won't achieve anything. If you think about what you can do, you'll be more open about your ability to succeed.

6. Surround yourself with optimistic people

People around you can have a massive impact on your mood. Positive people tend to be happy, while negative ones tend to be unhappy.

You'll be happier if you surround yourself with positive people. Emotional contagion is real, and you must use it in your favour.

Some people are more optimistic than others. You want to be around them. After all, you are the average of the people you spend the most time with!

7. Learn to manage your stress.

8. Be open to new experiences. Optimism helps you see the positive aspects of your life. If you are always looking at the negatives, you will miss out on what is good in life. It's important to keep an open mind and try new things in life. If you do this, you'll find that you will have more positive things happening.

9. Identify the opportunities from the difficulties you face

In retrospect, all difficult moments in my life presented opportunities and lessons for me. Yes, you can be upset, but make it a practice to see what else is being presented in front of you. What good can come out of bad events? The more you do it, the less you'll react to those.
