What does it mean to be frugal? For some people, the word "frugal" may bring up feelings of deprivation, misery and missing out. Or the idea that you are giving everything up for the sake of saving money. But this is not the whole story! When you become a frugal, you learn how to spend less on what does not matter and be happy.

In this post we will talk about what it means to be frugal and provide tips on how to live a frugal life without compromising happiness!

What is a frugal lifestyle?

When I heard “frugal”, I used to think that it means being miserably cheap by trying to save money and sacrificing everything for the sake of saving more money. But I was wrong! Frugality is about avoiding unnecessary and excessive spending so as not to overspend your hard-earned money on things that do not bring you joy.

In other words, it's living a simpler life without the need of spending too much time and money on more useless stuff. The term "useless" is relative, but chances are that you don't need all the things being advertised to you.

A frugal lifestyle is about keeping up with yourself and your needs rather than the Joneses'. You can still be happy even if you don't have the cool and expensive things.

There are plenty of ways to be frugal without sacrificing the pleasures in life.

You can live within your means and cut back on spending by eliminating unnecessary expenses like eating out when you could be cooking and shopping all the time when there are clothes you haven't even worn yet! I'm speaking from experience...

I used hate the idea of cutting down my expenses until I realized that it's about balancing your wants and your needs, and aligning them with your main financial goals in life.

What does it mean to be frugal with money?

Frugal is a word that has taken on many meanings over the years. To some people, frugality means spending as little money as possible while still being able to live comfortably enough and enjoy the finer things in life like vacations or social events every once in a while. For others, living frugally might mean never buying new clothes, cooking all of their meals at home, and never spending money on anything besides the bare necessities. The way I see it is that you define what being frugal means to you and how it applies to your lifestyle.

What does it mean to you? To me, frugal living means that I don't need to spend all my money in order to be happy. I like being able to afford all the bare necessities, splurge on my hobbies, and still be able to take care of my parents without constantly stressing about money. In order to do so, I am very strict on things that are unimportant to me like the newest trends and gadgets, takeaway food and coffee, and alcohol.

Being frugal with your money means saving your hard-earned money so your can have extra money to spend on things that bring you real lasting joy.

Ultimately, the goal of frugal living is to live a happy life without having the stress or anxiety that can add up from going into unnecessary debt. Unfortunately, too many of us get into debt for things that may never actually bring any lasting value in our lives. It's about being satisfied with what you already have, so you can avoid the pain of debt and living paycheck-to-paycheck.

The most important thing when it comes to frugal living is figuring out your priorities and sticking with them! It’s not always easy, but it will save you tons of money and stress in the long run.

Is it worth being frugal to save money?

It depends on what you want out of life! If you’re content with a simple lifestyle, then the benefits are endless. If you need a life of luxury, you may feel deprived. Only you can decide what’s best for you.

Everyone is different. You might live frugally and still want to travel the world, or you may be content with spending time with friends and family. It’s up to you!

Being frugal with the not-so important things means you can splurge on the important things - your dreams, your health, and your loved ones.

Some people who like simple things are afraid that they will miss out on a lot of life’s opportunities. The truth is that you can't have everything, and you can't be everywhere.

Being frugal helps you focus on where you really have to be and what you really need.

Frugal living is about prioritizing the things that matter most to us, like spending more time with loved ones or pursuing our dreams instead of impulsively buying items we don't need - but want.

It’s true that being frugal will often require sacrifices in the short term, but it allows for greater long-term benefits. By living frugally, we can save money for retirement or emergencies and spend on the things that bring lasting pleasure and fulfillment in our lives.

What are the benefits of frugal living?

A frugal life is not just about sacrifices. It comes with many benefits that you may not be aware of! From helping you save a lot of money, taking control of your own life, and reducing and/or preventing credit card debt, there are countless ways in which living a frugal life will improve your personal and financial life.

  • Build up an emergency fund that will help get through tough times and provide peace of mind.
  • Live a life that is rich in meaning and not things
  • Have more money to spend on the things that bring pleasure in your life.
  • Feel confident that you can survive on a fixed income as we age because your needs will be simpler. If you live frugally now, it will make it easier to retire comfortably with less money!
  • Develop better spending habits
  • Take control of your personal finance life
  • Decrease or prevent credit card debt
  • Develop a greater sense of appreciation for what you already have
  • Greater chances of achieving financial freedom

Frugal living tips to save money

In this day and age, there are countless free resources for you to help you live frugally. Whether it be learning, entertainment or health and fitness, it's all free and available for you in most popular sites like YouTube and blogs. There are definitely many ways to save money at your disposal. In addition to this, you can also save money by doing things yourself. The average person spends a lot of money on convenience that they don't really need!

Here are some frugal living ideas and tips to help you save more money:

  • Skip on the fast food and alcohol. These can take up a lot of money and aren't even good for your health!
  • Skip the expensive coffee shops and brew your own coffee or tea at home for a fraction of the cost.
  • Cook your own meals from scratch and use the food in your kitchen first before buying more expensive ingredients.  By meal planning, not only will you save money on your grocery bill, but you will also develop healthier eating habits as your own food will usually be healthier than fast food.
  • Cut your cable TV and watch free stuff on YouTube and other services. Make the most out of all the free fun things available on the internet. You will always find free entertainment. Avoid paying for things that are easily available online; this is an easy way to save money on your monthly bills!
  • Get rid of unused items that take up space because they are not worth keeping around any longer than necessary. Especially clothes you do not wear any more. You probably do not need as many clothes as you have.
  • Consider downgrading your gym membership to the basic one that provides you with just the access to all the equipment in the gym.
  • Consider downgrading your phone plan if you're not using all the features that come with your plan. I used to have way too much data I never used and was able to reduce my phone bill by $15/month just by downgrading my plan.
  • Consider what you really need and don't buy the new version of something that's out purely because of hype.
  • Spend on experiences rather than things because they bring memories along with them. You can share these moments with others or experience them alone which will make your day even better!
  • When buying something, make sure it will last you a long time. I typically don't buy things that won't last a couple of years at least.

The Takeaway

Frugal living is a lifestyle choice that many people make to avoid accumulating debt or spending more than they can afford to. It doesn’t mean you have to give up on your dreams and goals, but it does mean making some sacrifices in the short term for long-term benefit. Living frugally is a great way to save money and enjoy life. One of the key benefits to living frugally is that you get to spend the extra money on what you love.

It may feel as if you are only saving a few bucks here and there, but these savings will accumulate up to a point where you will save hundreds and thousands of dollars over time! That's more money in your bank account for your goals, savings, travels, dream house, or really anything that is important to you! Living a frugal lifestyle can help people live a happy and rich life full of meaning, without needing much money at all.  There are lots of ways that we unnecessarily spend money without realizing, and they often take more than they bring into our lives. I hope this post has helped you become a frugal person!
